Capstone Project Title: “Rise Above Plastics in School”
For my community-based capstone project I collaborated with Surfrider Foundation – Monterey Chapter. Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization whose mission is to protect and enjoy the oceans, waves, and beaches through a powerful activist network. I chose to focus specifically on their Rise Above Plastics program – a program that raises awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and ways to reduce the impacts of plastic trash in marine environments. My project consisted of developing a presentation for elementary school students to teach them about the negative impacts of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems and delivering the presentation. Being able to depict scientific information in a way that elementary school students could fully grasp was the most important skill I gained from this experience. In the development of these lesson plans oral communication was the strongest core competency that I feel most advanced as a result of completing my capstone project. For example, in order to confidently deliver this presentation I had to practice several times. Taking a significant amount of time to practice my presentation throughout the semester truly paid off. I feel that my project was successful in that it contributed to Surfrider’s community-wide effort to reduce marine plastic pollution. However, my efforts do not stop here. I plan to continue to spread the word about marine plastic pollution in our community through additional volunteer work with Surfrider Foundation and to work towards protecting our oceans in my future career.
